Are You in Violation of Housing Code Ordinances?

Let's suppose that various things around your house need repair but you just do not have the money to fix them. Perhaps the kids have outgrown their shoes and the school fees just increased. Although you were able to pay cash for some of it, you placed some costs on your credit card and you are trying to pay off the increased debt. Then the transmission goes out on your car. You get a ride home from the auto shop only to find a notice fastened to your front door by the local code officer.

  • The notice states that you must make the following repairs to your house:
    1. Replace your roof because it is missing shingles and the wood beneath is buckling.
    2. Fix the foundation because it is sinking.
    3. Fix the siding that is developing a crack because of the sinking foundation.
    4. Repair your chimney that is leaning precariously away from the house.
As if that is not enough, the notice states that you only have 30 days to get the repairs done. You have been aware of these problems for some time and had planned to get to them just as soon as you had the funds.

What Are Code Violations?

Types of problems with housing such as those listed above are "code violations." Each community and/or county establishes the specific minimum standards for housing in each area. These minimum standards are set not only because that is how the area wants its community to look, but also because these codes help to insure life safety and health issues.

For example, let's say that you had more children since you bought your house and need another bedroom. You cannot put an extra bedroom in the basement if there is only one stairway out. The bedroom must have its own direct exit to the outside so that in case of fire the person sleeping there would have a chance to get out alive.

If you have been cited for code ordinance violations and cannot fix the problem, call us. Maybe it would be better for you to get out from under a house that continually needs costly repairs and get one that better meets your needs. Lots of repairs just eat up your funds. Let us help.

Code enforcement officials are only doing their job. They are concerned about the safety and health considerations of their residents and cannot be responsible for a homeowner's inability to bring their home up to standards. Unexpected code ordinance violations can interrupt your dreams of a suitable life style.
