Are Needed Major Repairs Overwhelming You?
Realtor and mortgage company advertisements suggest that everyone can and should own his or her own home because a monthly mortgage payment can be less than rent. That may be true, but television commercials and newspaper and radio ads neglect to mention that when you become a homeowner, you assume responsibility for everything that can go wrong.

- What do you do when the furnace goes out?
The temperature is below freezing with a long winter ahead. You call someone to fix the furnace and take the day off from work so you can let him in the house. He hands you a bill for which he expects immediate payment and maybe tells you that he cannot repair it and you need a new furnace. A new furnace would possibly lower your heating costs. Maybe you can buy it over time. Now you have more bills to add to your growing stack. If you were a renter, the landlord would be responsible for repairing or replacing the furnace. Making the decision and paying the resultant bills would not be your problem.
- Do you need a new roof?
Maybe in the last windstorm your roof lost many shingles and has started leaking. Now you have to pay the bills to replace your roof. This is a landlord's responsibility if you are renting, not yours.
- Do your windows need replacing?
Are your windows old? Can you feel a cold draft leaking through the windowsill? Replacing all the windows in your home can be very expensive, but will help you reduce your utility payment costs. Will you save enough on your gas or electric bill to pay for the windows? More items to add to your already mounting bills.
- Are your kitchen appliances breaking down?
Suppose your old stove just went out. You call the repairman who gives you a bill and tells you that the stove cannot be fixed because it is obsolete and parts are no longer available. Not only that, but the space allowed for it between your cabinets is too small to fit the standard size stoves built today. Now you need to remodel your kitchen cabinets to make space for a new stove which you purchased by credit card. Even worse, now you have increased debt on a credit card that has growing interest rates.

| The downside of home ownership is that the bills just will not stop piling up. Constant home maintenance and major repair bills can cause distress and financial instability.
